Barry McCormick - Illusionary Photography

Barry McCormick

After rambling around on both coasts with my family while attempting to grow up, I achieved a degree in finance in the late 60’s from the University of Colorado, Boulder. The natural progression, of course, was to become a commercial photographer. I practiced that profession for over 30 years in Fairfield County, Connecticut, just outside New York City, where I apparently satisfied a number of corporate clients, advertising agencies, and graphic design firms.

I had a large studio, employing as many as 5 employees, and we specialized in large format food and product photography. We actually produced images in most specialties except high fashion and architecture.

I had assumed that after such a long time in the business, I would be revered as a ”master of the craft,” but alas, I was being treated more as one of a few remaining dinosaurs in the business. As digital imaging grew from infancy to adolescence, I began to see interesting possibilities outside the commercial arena.

During this time my personal work involved people and still lifes, rooted entirely in the black & white tradition. New technologies presented a combination of color photography, fine art papers, and the ability to rework imagery.

It was time to move on, and aim in new directions. These current images represent an early stage in what I anticipate will be a new creative journey.

When I begin the photography process, I aim in a general direction, but the best images are created when I allow myself to ricochet off the possibilities along the way.
